Job Introduction

Our Support Functions are the foundations of our operations, supporting our colleagues and crew to deliver nothing but excellence for all our customers at ArrowXL.

Here at ArrowXL we run our trunking fleet to collect stock from clients and deliver returns, while maintaining the correct balance of trailers across the network (ensuring everything is in the right place at the right time).

We are now looking for a Transport Controller to support us in maintaining our national trunking operational performance, working as part of a team monitoring operational activity, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Role Responsibility

Working with ArrowXL’s commercial management, planning and trunking teams you will create daily plans to best utilise resource (made up of ArrowXL units & drivers and sub-contractors).

You will be routing vehicles around the UK, managing stand trailers with clients, adapting collections times to suit the ArrowXL & client operations while always creating the most cost-effective plan in line with the trunking budget.

Alternate weeks you will work with the Control Tower team, delivering the plan, on the day, making swift decisions to ensure the network hits all agreed collection and inter-depot trunking times.  You will be in constant discussion with our site gatehouses and contractor partners to maintain control and react to same day plan changes.

You will work with the Trunking GM and the Network Planning Manager to take a strategic view on the set up and development of the trunking network, creating core plans to make sure we have the right type and level of resource available throughout the year, including our complex trailer fleet.

Duties will include

• Planning routes throughout the UK for up to 100 vehicles a day across many ArrowXL sites and multiple client collections point
• Liaising with sub-contractors to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective route and service is delivered
• Providing accurate routing information to ensure that delivery times and locations are coordinated

• Communicating with drivers, subcontractors, managers & key personnel
• Work with the wider teams, internally and with clients – creating warehouse inbound schedules
• Ensuring compliance with all current legislation and regulation
• Obtaining quotes for trailer movements and making cost comparisons
• Managing a busy back shift while on Control Tower, reacting to changes (extra collections)

Working Hours

40 hours per week. The role will alternate over a 2-week cycle, Monday to Friday:

• Week 1 – 10:00 – 18:00
• Week 2 – 14:00 – 22:00

The Ideal Candidate

This is a role which will suit a dynamic and progressive individual with experience of working within a highly competitive and pressurised transport operating environment.

Key skills

• Experience of Route Planning & Scheduling
• General haulage, trunking & returns (in house or 3PL)
• Traffic management within a busy traffic office experience
• Excellent geographic knowledge of the UK
• Backload management
• Driving regulations for LGV, Working Time Directive, Driving Hours etc.
• Experience of Transport Management systems
• Excellent MS Office skills (especially Excel)

Package Description

•      An annual salary of £25,000 to £28,000 (depending on experience)
